kelseygrammer-yourewaytoointoit replied to your post: last night’s macaroni and cheese posts got me…

my aunt made some mac and cheese with pepper jack and green onions and croutons baked in it was so good

i thought about putting some chopped leeks in it but i’m saving those for baked potatoes and salads. besides, i was feeling like a purist.

last night’s macaroni and cheese posts got me craving it. unfortunately, kraft mac n cheese is one of those foods i’m cutting out indefinitely. i mean, the reason i learned to cook was so i would know how to make delicious food instead of paying someone else to make it. so i decided to make some home baked mac n cheese…ohmygawd. gouda sauce with some raw sharp cheddar sprinkled on top. heavens.

my stepdad and i are about to do the big winter stock-up at the food co-op this weekend; he gets a discount until the end of December so now is as good of a time as any. since we live on a subsistence farm a lot of our food production comes to a halt in the fall with the exception of bottling wine. we have tons of fruit and vegetables preserved but all of the rice, beans, etc that we grew have been eaten. we’re mostly vegetarian and get our meat from another farm. so far i’ve got:

  • short grain brown rice
  • basmati rice
  • dried kidney beans
  • dried black beans
  • 3 grain tempeh (for freezing)
  • tofu (also for freezing)
  • tamari
  • rice vinegar
  • oatmeal
  • honey
  • cashews
  • almonds
  • olive oil
  • canola oil
  • balsamic vinegar

i know i’ve got some followers who are into sustainable living…what am i forgetting?

On my re-blog of drinking while pregnant...

esmeweatherwax:

cabell:

alexandraerin:

momsstheword:

My comments have of course been re-blogged a few times already, and more than one irate person has suggested I get a fucking clue and produce some hard evidence. Well, here’s at least one link:

http://www.nofas.org/FASDMythsPerpetuatedbyMediaCoverage.aspx

In addition, I never said ONE drink causes FAS. I really wish people would read more thouroughly. I said that there is always a RISK involved evertytime you drink while pregnant. And I really, really don’t get why when there is objection to something like drinking, smoking cigarettes, or pot while pregnant, proponents of it will cite “fear-mongering” or other women being judgemental.

Also, I encourage you to show me YOUR evidence that a few drinks “won’t hurt” or that it is actually GOOD for your baby. Please. I’m dying to read it.

No Wikipedia, please. (-:

What the heck do you imagine pregnant women have done in the places throughout history and geography where alcohol was the easiest way to make water safe to drink?

You are being judgmental. That’s all this is. It’s not concern for anybody, it’s concern for the relative highness of your horse.

Link to all the single issue advocacy pages you want, that’s not evidence and it has no bearing on the central question here, which is: is this your business or isn’t it? If it isn’t, then let’s forget whether you’re “allowed” to have an opinion or not… why are you sharing it?

If you can’t restrain yourself from throwing out an example of a real person you know and her choices and how her choices are OMGSOWRONG, then clearly you do think it’s your business.

As someone who has been pregnant and screw you, I totally drank beer, I just want to say  IF IT ISN’T YOUR BODY, SHUT THE FUCK ON UP.

Here is a 2011 study showing that at five years of age, children born to people who drank “lightly” (no more than two drinks per occasion, no more than twice per week) during pregnancy actually performed better on cognitive and behavioral tests than children born to people who did not drink at all during pregnancy: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20924051

This study actually shows that light-to-moderate drinking (in this case defined as between 3-10 drinks per week) during pregnancy was associated with measures of positive behavior up to 14 years of age: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20528867

This study shows that light-to-moderate drinking during pregnancy (up to 6 drinks per week in this case) has no negative impact on fetal growth and may actually be associated with slightly greater fetal growth compared to complete cessation of drinking during pregnancy (so no risk of low birth weight or preterm birth): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20385669

This is a meta-study (an analysis of numerous other studies), finding that moderate drinking (in THIS case, defined as anywhere from 3 to 12 drinks a week) in the first trimester has no effect on the prevalence of fetal malformations (the study only looks at the first trimester): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9511170

I researched this extensively when I got pregnant.  There does seem to be some good evidence that even light drinking MAY increase the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester (this is still a bit dodgy, especially since there are a lot of people who don’t know they’re pregnant until halfway through the first trimester or even later ); however, if one doesn’t miscarry, light-to-moderate alcohol consumption is not associated with any lasting defects or problems.  And from the second trimester on, there is really no evidence that, say, fewer than six drinks a week (and no more than two drinks on any given occasion) is harmful to fetal development.

Fetal alcohol syndrome, which is what most people envision when they think about drinking during pregnancy, takes a HELL of a lot more than one drink.  FAS is caused by the equivalent of NINE DRINKS A DAY during the second trimester.  It entirely affects infants born to alcoholics.  Maternal malnutrition will become an issue long before there is risk of FAS, because people drinking heavily on a daily basis are unlikely to be getting calories from many other sources.

I remember an episode of Law & Order SVU fucking this up, apparently one little drink can cause FAS! Eh no.

that rule about not drinking while pregnant isn’t applied in many other areas of the world, including the EU where they have arguably better healthcare than we do. sure, it’s pretty dumb to get drunk if you’re pregnant, but a glass of red wine is encouraged by french obstetricians. they also say that if you were a heavy smoker when you got pregnant it’s better for you and the baby to wean off them rather than quit cold turkey. a lot of the information pregnant women receive is basically to avoid lawsuits; OB is one of the most malpractice-happy specialties out there. the moral of the big picture is to mind your own uterus.

This makes me feel so hopeful. We need more human decency in this country, and less greed.

Go ahead and give Deutsche Bank a call and let them know that this is ridiculous. Voice your opinion and help keep this woman in her home that she deserves. The number is 1 212 250 2500. When you get connected, ask for the “Property department”

'Dilbert' Creator Scott Adams Compares Women Asking for Equal Pay to Children Demanding Candy  → comicsalliance.com

stfusexists:

“The reality is that women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently. It’s just easier this way for everyone. You don’t argue with a four-year old about why he shouldn’t eat candy for dinner. You don’t punch a mentally handicapped guy even if he punches you first. And you don’t argue when a women tells you she’s only making 80 cents to your dollar. It’s the path of least resistance. You save your energy for more important battles.”  -Scott Adams

I love how he almost comes out and says exactly what he actually means, which is, “Women are treated like children and disabled persons because they are incapable of doing things men can”. That’s patently false, and that’s why we’re all pissed that women are getting paid less to do the exact. Same. Things.

What an asshole. Dilbert was mediocre at best, you jackass!

WOW.

"Correct me if i'm wrong."

feministdisney:

man-is-the-bastard:

Surely In a post feminist society, we should abolish rap music. It’s racist and sexist.

it’s a good thing you’re open to being corrected if you’re wrong, because

A) we’re not a post-feminist society, assuming we hail from the same society, especially because

B) Feminism deals with internalized racism, which is pertinent since

C) your statement in itself is probably racist since rap is predominantly a black music genre and this fact has surely not escaped your observation.   It would appear that

D) you have bought into the white-culture myth that ALL rap music- ALL of it- is 100% the same.   That all of it is racist (how, anyway, is that true even sometimes?   Because less white people are involved than in every other industry where they dominate, it must be racist?), all of it is sexist, even though

E) you would never say that about an entire genre of music where white people are the majority of performers.   You will never- unless in jest because I am saying it now- see a post on tumblr that says simply, “Correct me if I’m wrong, but surely we should abolish rock music because it is sexist and racist.”   Et cetera.   I can only assume that

F) going back to D, you really have never taken the time to talk to anyone about rap, or listened to more than just the songs that make it into the general top 20, which is hardly representative of all rap music.   And yet you still felt comfortable making a grandiose statement about an entire musical genre including thousands of different artists, and hundreds of different types of rappers.  And yes, it’s true that

G) some rap music- perhaps even a majority- often espouses sexist, gay hating, rape culture supporting, et cetera lyrics, and often has themes and statements that are generally distasteful.   But that’s like anything.   You’ll find a lot of bad ish in any music genre- or any film genre (Disney!)- or any television genre.    But that doesn’t mean there is an issue with

rap music, in general.   Sometimes it is bad.  Sometimes it is empowering.   Sometimes it is offensive- and sometimes it is beautiful.

  • I’m not that into music in general but here are some of my favorite rap songs you might like as well
  • A good voice on this to check out is Joan Morgan and her discussions on Hip-Hop and Feminism

Dear people who use the confederate flag

stfuconfederates:

^ This is the flag of your country and your government. This is the flag that represents your freedom, the soldiers who fight for that freedom, the constitution, and the 200+ years of history that have shaped this nation.

image

^ This is the flag that represents people who attempted to keep their “right” to own others, who attempted to divide this country you’re allegedly “proud” of and who subjugated and abused a large portion of the citizens of this nation, fighting to keep freedom solely for white people rather than enjoyed by all. The fact that this flag DOES NOT represent a country is a major victory.

Southern pride should be about a lot more than that shitty, disgusting, symbol of racism.

THANK YOU. if you want real southern pride, get a flag with a pecan pie on it.

KENTUCKY CHURCH VOTES TO BAN INTERRACIAL COUPLES FROM BECOMING MEMBERS → thinkprogress.org

eryntherat:

ladyatheist:

religiousragings:

sharqubus:

A small church in Pike County, Kentucky voted not to accept interracial couples as members or allow them to take part in some worship activities, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. Melvin Thompson, minister at Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, explained that the resolution “is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve.” Thompson issued the ban after a white woman and her black fiance, a native of Zimbabwe, performed at the church in August.

What is this fuckery? You want to promote the unity of your community by excluding people? And basing that exclusion on race?

Religion: providing a great excuse to promote your own ridiculous agenda as the will of god since man first invented gods.

More religious fuckery.  Moses was supposedly in an interracial marriage, wasn’t he?  ~ Steve

what

the

fuck.

honestly, they’re only fucking themselves over. it’s EASY to find another church in kentucky and they may lose some members over this — no wedding fees and fewer tithes means less revenue. interracial relationships are becoming more common all the time; something tells me if this were, oh, a white guy and an asian girl the church may not have made this a policy. white patriarchy does NOT like it when white women get black boyfriends.
